Don Komarechka the Mad Scientist Photographer (Podcast 533)

This week I share an awesome conversation with my friend Don Komarechka about his most recent crazy scientist photography, as he sinks his teeth into full-spectrum, infrared and ultraviolet photography, as well as stereoscopic 3D macro photography.

Don Komarechka the Mad Scientist Photographer

As Don himself said when he emailed me about this new work, it makes for a fun outside-the-box chat, which I’m sure you are going to enjoy. We didn’t script any of this, so there is no manuscript this week, but below are the 14 images that Don shared with us.

You can find Don and connect with him via the social links on his web site at www.donkom.ca.

These photos are pretty high resolution, so open up your browser window nice and wide, then click on them to view the larger image. To stop the images from auto-advancing, just place your mouse over them.

For this 3D macro photography, you can actually view them in 3D by going cross-eyed, and adjust your eyes until the point where both images overlap. I also had to tilt my head slightly, because one eye is higher than the other. Once you get the two images registered though, the effect is amazing, so do give it a try.

As always Don is very entertaining and a great photographer. I love that he is willing to really push the boundaries and really enjoys doing it. Another refreshing aspect about Don is that he doesn’t seem to ooze self importance. This is a trait that is hard to find in the photography world these days. Thanks for having him on Martin and look forward to your next episode.

That’s great to hear Matt! I’m really pleased that you enjoyed this one.

It’s always a pleasure talking with Don, but it wouldn’t mean anything if you guys don’t enjoy it. Of course, I know there’s not much chance of that happening. As you say, Don is a really down to earth guy.

          Cheers,
          Martin.

Very Interesting podcast. I was able to see the 3D images. I’ve never known about crossing your eyes. Fascinating! Thanks for introducing me to Don. I’ve been considering converting my original Canon Rebel to infrared. Now, I may end up doing that.

That’s great Ron. I’m pleased you were able to see the 3D images. It makes all the difference.

I’m happy that you’ve been introduced to Don now. Have fun!

Oh my! I’m a student of Don’s and I stay perpetually intimidated by his expertise in so many areas. I’m planning to shoot the meteors with Don in a couple of weeks and to hear that he’s planning to capture them in stereoscopic 3D just pushes me over the edge. I may have to call in sick!

Excellent! That’s so funny Carl. I hope you have a great time with Don shooting the meteors.
